The Abbey Cinema, on Church Road North, has helped form part of the Wavertree skyline and the area’s identity for decades
Supermarket chain Lidl has confirmed plans to demolish a former Liverpool cinema to make way for a new store.
Lidl bought the former Abbey Cinema building on Church Road North in Wavertree last year, after the Co-op moved out.
Last year campaign group Love Wavertree and The Wavertree Society both said they wanted to work with Lidl to avoid demolition.
Lidl has now announced that following an extensive survey they have decided that the building is “beyond economic repair.”
Plans will be put before the council to demolish the former picture palace that features in the original draft lyrics to The Beatles song In My Life.
The company intend to build a new multi-million pound store on the site which will create 30 jobs.
