It was largely business as usual in last week’s Nielsen Music Midyear Report. Streaming is up, traditional album sales are down, vinyl’s heroic resurgence persists, and CDs and digital albums continue their death march into obscurity. Oh, and BTS is still crushing it.
The Korean pop septet’s new album, Map of the Soul: 7, is the bestselling physical album of the year and the only one to sell over 500,000 copies in the United States, more than doubling the sales of runner-up Kenny Chesney. Map of the Soul: 7 is also the ninth-biggest overall album of the year, moving 842,000 equivalent units derived from album sales, track downloads and streams.
Half a century after their breakup, The Beatles are still the biggest rock band of 2020, shifting 1.094 million album-equivalent units through the first six months of the year, 326,000 units ahead of the genre’s second-place finisher, Queen. The Fab Four also had the fifth-bestselling vinyl album of the year, selling 54,000 copies of their 1969 opus Abbey Road. They had good company in the vinyl category, including fellow classic rock icons Queen and Pink Floyd, pop supernova Billie Eilish and retro-rock heartthrob Harry Styles. The Beatles also perform exceptionally well on streaming services, with many songs racking up hundreds of millions of plays.
It’s fitting that the Beatles and BTS—two boy bands that dominated the music industry nearly six decades apart—would be the bestselling groups of 2020. Both groups enchanted waves of fans around the world with their talent and charisma, cultivating unique personas to stand out from their bandmates. Both groups continued to one-up themselves with a series of increasingly ambitious and successful albums. And based on Nielsen’s Midyear Report, neither group’s popularity shows any signs of waning.
As a huge Beatles & BTS fan, I couldn’t be happier!!..We know everything about the Beatles, not just a “boyband”, but as a group, their humb le beginnings, amazing writings, re: different subjects, musicianship, creativity, growth, undeniable chemistry together & as talented solo artists with amazing personalities & great humor, will forever be in our hearts..

Many don’t know about BTS’ story, not just a “boyband”..They also had humble beginnings..Began as a hip-hop group, built around genius/IQ 148 15 yr old *RM* , fire flow, crazy, raw, over-lapping wordplay in Korean, (self-taught) English &Japanese underground rapper + producer..The CEO/composer of Big Hit was in awe 2010, others joined between 2010-2011, then late 2012 Jimin joined…At one point all lived in one apt/one bed- room, cuz the company was small & often near bankruptcy,
but giving the boiiiz creative freedom to write & produce, as
teens, w/in-house writers/producers, guiding them along & became a musical family..Even after winning”Rookies Of The Year” were singing/dancing behind big acts on tv, to keep their company afloat.. They’ve written about many social issues, since their teens, b4 their 2013 tv debut.. DEEP Song/Rapwri- ters, Producers (their ‘Song Of.the Year’-“Spring Day”-a thinly veiled criticism how then govt mis-handled/covered up the Sewol Ferry tragedy where hundreds of students died-was on the Gaon charts for 3 yrs), Best Rap Trio ever, 4 awesome Vocalists, Musicians & crazy Dancers are probably the hardest working artists in the biz…Prolific writers, w/creativity in diffe- rent album concepts, album trilogies, many based on art, lite-rature or just on dealing w/living life & overcoming struggles, not take the easy route, but work hard, espec. young people learning to love themselves before learning to love others.. Joined UNICEF 2017 & *RM* gave a speech at the United Na- tions re: protecting children & youth, from violence, globally, etc..
They recv’d undeserved hate early on, from fellow rappers for leaving underground rap for *KPop*, from media who said they wouldn’t make it from a small co, not the “Big 3″Entertainment companies, from toxic Anti-fans of then Top group who cyber-
bullied EVERYTHING about them, accused them of buying own cds to inflate charts (when broke), even death threats (over music)!!..Very hurt, they kept grinding, posting behind the scenes of EVERYTHING from concerts, vocal/dance practices, in studio singing/rapping recordings, travels, own reality shows being their goofy selves (they’re hilarious!) & started to rise
